Bag Toss is A Fun Game for Everyone
A backyard game that’s similar to horseshoes and washers is bag toss. Bag toss doesn’t have the same level of skill required as these other games but can still be a lot of fun, especially for children. Because of its simplicity it won’t take long to setup and is a game that everyone will be able to understand quickly.
Bag toss originated in the US centuries ago and hasn’t changed much in this time. The general idea is that the player throws a bean bag onto a board that has a hole in it. If you land the bag on the board then you get a point and if you get the bag through the hole you get more points. The aim of the game is to outscore your opponent so that you reach the points limit before they do.
In most variations of the game you’ll split the players into two teams who’ll then take turns to throw. The winner is the first to reach a certain number of points collectively. Traditionally the game is the first to 21 although you can adjust this based on how long you want the game to last. You should also decide beforehand whether you want to play a best of three match or just stick with a single game.
The distance between the thrower and board is around 27ft in a competitive game although for younger players you should adjust this anywhere down to 20 ft to give them a fairer chance of scoring points. Make sure you setup a foul line – if the thrower crosses this line then the throw isn’t valid and should not be counted.
The classic variation of the game uses a board with a single hole. If you land the bag onto the board you get a single point and if you get it through the whole you get three. If the bag hits the ground before rolling onto the board then this is not considered to be a point scoring throw. In this case the bag becomes a “dead bag” and should be removed from the playing area.
More modern variations of the game have a board with several different sizes holes in it. The different holes are worth different points. Remember that the higher number of points you can get for a certain hole the quicker the game will be so you may have to adjust the scoring system based on which holes you have in your board.
