Types of Garden Planters

Posted by James Gardener in Gardens

Garden planters along with window boxes and flower pots come in many shapes and sizes and of course, materials. Some garden planters are made out of wood, while some are made out of terracotta, ceramic, resin, clay, fiberglass, concrete and even metal. For those planning to buy garden planters, it would be rather difficult to choose among the many styles, sizes and materials but what every gardener should think of is quality and of course, the right size of the garden planters you are getting.

New production methods for garden planters have now made it possible to choose from myriad of decorative styles, colors and even textures. Garden planters do not come in different materials for no reason at all. Different materials used in making garden planters, window boxes and flowerpots are good for certain seasons. Wood garden planters for example are very good for insulating plant roots during the summertime. Apart from that, wooden planters are versatile and can be incorporated in your home no matter what the design.

Concrete garden planters on the other hand can handle large roots of trees and plants. The downside of using this type of garden planter is that it can be rather heavy and impractical especially for people who love rearranging their garden planters.

Stone garden planters age beautifully and they will fit in any garden and make it look more sophisticated. Real stone planters are a bit heavy though.

Terracotta garden planters come from the oldest materials ever used by mankind. Terracotta clay is still a popular material for pots and planters to day and its mass appeal is undeniable. Garden planters made out of Terracotta clay however need a lot of attention especially if they are not thin-walled. The best advice when buying terracotta garden planters is to get ones with thicker walls to ensure that they will last a very long time your garden.

Metal garden planters are very durable and age beautifully like those made out of stone. One thing to remember about garden planters made out of metal is that it really heats up during summertime and can rapidly dry the soil inside the planter. This will eventually damage the roots of your plants.

For those who want a colorful theme on their patios, garden or balcony, getting ceramic garden planters is the best choice. Glazed stoneware pots make good garden planters if you want to complement the colors and the textures of your plants.

Whichever material you choose, make sure that it suits the plant you are planning use on your garden planters.
