Horseshoes – Great Family Fun!

Posted by James Gardener in Backyard Fun

If you have a couple of old sticks and some spare horseshoes in your garden then you’ll be surprised at the fun you can have with them! An old and often overlooked game, horseshoes can be very enjoyable for adults and children alike and is one of the easiest backyard games to play right there on the lawn. This article will give you a guideline on how you can play horseshoes in your garden.

First of all, what is the basic game play of horseshoes? The idea is that two teams of people using four horseshoes and two stakes take it in turns to try and throw the horseshoes onto the opposite stake. While in the past horseshoes were used, you can now buy games made where the objects you throw are more U shaped and much larger than an old horseshoe making the game easier but more enjoyable. However, you can still use the horseshoe if you want to save money or want more of a challenge.

Before you begin to play you need to setup correctly. Whilst horseshoes is a simple game and doesn’t require much preparation you’ll need to make sure that all four horseshoes are the same size for a fair game and that the stakes are around 40 feet apart. If you haven’t played much before or have small children playing there is no reason why you can’t move the stakes closer though as it can be difficult to throw 40 feet accurately straight away.

While the rules for horseshoe pitching vary depending on where you live there are a set of rules that were used when the game was in its prime. Also, there is a governing body in the US for horseshoes and they keep the “official” rules although of course you’re free to adapt them however you like should you wish.

In most forms of the game there are two different ways to score a point. If you get the horseshoe over the stake then this is obviously a point, but should this not happen then the point is given to the team throwing who was closest. If both of one teams horseshoes are closer to the stake than the other teams then two points are given. However to score a pint the horseshoe must be within six inches of the post so if you want to play seriously you’ll probably need a tape measure to settle any arguments!
