The Lap Pool

Posted by James Gardener in Pools

The single most effective piece of exercise equipment is a lap pool. It is a swimming pool specifically designed primarily for doing laps and not for the fun and enjoyment of swimming. Swimming burns calories and improves cardiovascular capabilities. The best part in this type of workout is that you sweat it off without being sweaty and stinky. It is low-impact too, meaning your joints do not get the pounding it gets from other exercises like running.

Choices

Just because a lap pool is already singled out as one for a specific purpose, there are other types too. Among the most popular types are the following:

A rectangular shaped swimming pool may be considered as a lap pool and would usually have to be even in depth all throughout the length of it. Lines may be painted or tiled along the bottom to represent the lanes for races. These may still be used for recreational purposes but are not safe for younger children due to the depth.

Other lap pools are so obvious because they are constructed specifically for that purpose. The pool is so narrowly built to accommodate only one swimmer. Surely you will not mistake this for a recreational swimming pool?

Or you may want to opt for the resistance or so-called endless types. These have sizes as small Jacuzzis, just enough to accommodate the whole length of a swimming adult plus a few inches or a couple of feet extra. How do you do your laps in such a short distance? It is simple, you do your laps with the help of the resistance that the water current generated by powerful motors provide. It is called endless because you can do your laps straight, without the break of having to flip around to the other side. Strength is also developed in these types because the resistance of the water current can be adjusted. Think of it as a swimmer’s treadmill.

Where do you install it?

You can install it just like any other swimming pool. Where else? Outdoors, of course. However, some have them installed indoors. Modern condominium complexes even have them installed in the individual units. Or for an added functional twist, install it in your living room as a nifty water feature or fixture when not in use that you can jump into in an instant for your workout routine.

Add-ins

If you already have your lap pool, there may be other things that you may want to add. A water heater perhaps? Try doing your laps in the dead of winter. An automated cleaner is a smart purchase too. Would you go for a dip in murky waters? Or would you want to do your laps alongside algae blooms? Totally gross and definitely unhealthy.

If you are ready and would really want to get fit the best possible way, install a lap pool in your home now. Or why not a full-blown swimming pool to be enjoyed by others while you do your laps? Get wet and get fit.
