Washers Game Is Still a Family Favorite

Washers is one of those great games that can be played no matter where you are. Whether you’re on vacation at the beach or in your own backyard it doesn’t take long to setup a game of washers to play with friends and family. Not only that but because it doesn’t rely on strength the game can be played by the whole family on an equal playing field.

The general idea in the backyard version of washers it that you have a small plastic cup a certain distance away from the thrower. The thrower must try and get washers into the cup or, failing that, as close as possible. The closest to the cup gets a point and you get five points for getting a washer directly into the cup.

When setting up a game of washers you need to take into account the size and age of the people playing. The traditional distance between thrower and cup is around 25 feet, but if you have small children playing you may have to move them closer to be fair. Remember to place a cup at each end of the game.

Once you’ve setup the game you need to split everyone who’s playing into two teams. Each player in a team takes it in turns to throw a washer.

While there are a lot of different rules for washers you’re free to make up your own although in most cases the game continues until one player or team reaches twenty one. However the winning team must be at least two points ahead at this time otherwise the game goes to sudden death.

If the game is a “wipe-out”, in other words one team has 11 points and the other team zero, then the game is automatically won without the leading team having to get to 21. Also, if a team reaches 17 and the opposing team only has one point then the game is also finished early.

The great thing about the backyard game of washers is that it’s very simple to learn but deceptively hard to master. When you first start to toss a washer you’ll be surprised at how difficult it is but before long you’ll get the hang of it and have more success. Remember that if you’ve played horseshoes before you’ll have to adopt a different technique to tossing washers because if you flip a washer it is likely to bounce out of a cup even if you’re accurate.
